Oberammergau's Hidden Gem: Hotel Alte Post - Unforgettable Stay!
Oberammergau's Hotel Alte Post: More Than Just a Pretty Postcard (An Unfiltered Review)
Alright, folks, let me tell you about the Hotel Alte Post in Oberammergau. Forget those glossy travel brochures; I'm here to give you the real scoop, the stuff they conveniently leave out. Buckle up, because this isn't your average hotel review; it's a freewheeling, slightly chaotic, and hopefully helpful account of my stay.

The Arrival: First Impressions & Accessibility - A Mixed Bag (But Mostly Good!)
So, you're cruising into Oberammergau, dreaming of Bavarian charm and alpine vistas. The Hotel Alte Post immediately delivers on that. It's a gorgeous building. Seriously, think gingerbread house meets five-star hotel. The exterior is picture-postcard perfect, all painted facades and flower boxes overflowing with color.
Accessibility: Now, this is where things get a little… complicated. The entrance looks accessible, and there's an elevator – praise the Lord! – but maneuvering inside can be a bit of a tight squeeze. I noticed, from the website, they tout facilities for disabled guests, and while they've done their best, it's not a fully seamless experience. Some areas, particularly towards the spa (more on that later), are a little cramped. The hallways are wide enough for the most of the wheelchairs. But, honestly I thought the staff offered amazing assistance and that always makes a difference, or breaks the whole experience. [Accessibility Rating: 7.5/10]
Check-in & Services: Smooth Sailing (Mostly!)
The check-in process was surprisingly efficient. The staff, bless their Bavarian hearts, were incredibly charming and helpful. I mean, genuinely helpful, not just the robotic smile-and-nod kind. They were patient with my (admittedly subpar) German and even offered tips on local sights. Contactless check-in/out was an option, which is always a plus these days. The concierge service was also top-notch, helping me book a last-minute Passion Play ticket (essential, trust me!). The hotel offers daily housekeeping and the doorman was always ready to assist with luggage, and the luggage storage was perfect for storing bags before, and after checking out. There's even a cash withdrawal machine in the lobby, which came in handy since I'd forgotten to hit the bank! I'm pretty sure there's a dry cleaning and laundry service, too, but didn't need it as I managed not to spill schnitzel all over myself (miracle!). [Service & Convenience Rating: 9/10]
The Room: Cozy Comfort (With a Slight Glitch)
My room? Lovely. Seriously, it felt like stepping into a fairytale. We're not sure whether this was a couple's room, or a family room, but it served the purposes, well. Non-smoking rooms are pretty standard now, but a good thing to know. It was a standard room with Air conditioning, and Air conditioning in the public area, which was perfect for staying warm. Blackout curtains guaranteed a good night's sleep, and the extra long bed was perfect. The bathroom had a bathtub, and a separate shower/bathtub. There were bathrobes and slippers, which gave the feeling of luxury. The complimentary tea and coffee/tea maker, was a blessing. It had a wonderful seating area, and a little desk great for getting in a little work. The desk, and ironing facilities were a massive plus, and the ironing facilities were also great. Unfortunately, the internet was slow, and the internet [LAN] didn't work. [Room Rating: 8/10]
Amenities & Things to Do: A Spa Adventure (That Nearly Ended in Disaster!)
Alright, let's talk about the good stuff. The Spa! The Sauna! The Swimming Pool! The Hotel Alte Post delivers on the relaxation front.
The Pool with View: Seriously, the outdoor swimming pool is stunning. Picture this: crystal-clear water, the Bavarian Alps as your backdrop, and you, blissfully floating. Pure magic.
The Spa Saga: Now, buckle up, because this is where things get interesting. I opted for a Body wrap. The whole experience started out beautifully. The spa area is tranquil, designed with a modern take on the regional style. The staff are all so friendly and professional. The massage was divine, and I drifted into a state of pure relaxation.
Then, disaster.
My body wrap, well… let's just say it involved something that really didn’t agree with my skin. I came out of that treatment looking… significantly redder. I definitely needed the First aid kit and found out about their amazing doctor/nurse on call. The staff handled it with grace and efficiency (and a whole lot of soothing cream!), but it was a lesson learned: always check what you’re getting yourself into! This wasn't the hotel's fault, and the Hygiene certification was totally spot on, but the experience was… memorable. I did not try a Foot bath after that experience. I did test out the Gym/fitness, and the quality was great. But if you're going, I suggest checking the small print.
Spa/Sauna Complex: The facilities, in general, are excellent, but they are crowded. This is a popular hotel, especially at the spa.
Other Relaxation: There is a steamroom that is pretty neat, as well as available Body scrub treatments.
[Spa & Relaxation Rating: 8.5/10 (Despite the Redness Incident!)]
Dining, Drinking & Snacking: Schnitzel Dreams & Breakfast Buffets (Yum!)
The Hotel Alte Post has several dining options, and they're all pretty darn good.
- Breakfast Buffet: Oh. My. God. The breakfast buffet is legendary. We have Western breakfast, and Asian breakfast available. The Buffet in restaurant is huge, with everything from fresh fruit and pastries to delicious German sausages. They offer Breakfast service as well.
- Restaurants: The Restaurants are on-site with A la carte in restaurant, and Buffet in restaurant options are available.
- Drinks: I'm a big fan of a good bar, and the Hotel Alte Post's bar does not disappoint. They've got a great selection of beers, wines, and cocktails. The Poolside bar is a great place to spend the afternoon. Also, they have Happy hour.
- Snacks & Other Options: You can also find: Coffee/tea in restaurant, Bottle of water, Desserts in restaurant, Salad in restaurant, Soup in restaurant, and the Snack bar.
- Dietary Needs: There's a Vegetarian restaurant (although, honestly, who comes to Germany for a salad?). The Alternative meal arrangement, is available, in case of any issues with specific requirements.
- Room Service: They offer Room service [24-hour]
[Dining & Drinking Rating: 9/10 (That breakfast, though!)
Cleanliness & Safety: Reassuringly Thorough (Especially Now)
Safety and cleanliness are clearly a priority at the Hotel Alte Post.
- COVID-19 Measures: They had all the usual measures in place, like Hand sanitizer stations everywhere and Staff trained in safety protocol. The rooms are Rooms sanitized between stays and the Daily disinfection in common areas, with Anti-viral cleaning products.
- Other Safety Features: Also, they had the Fire extinguisher, Fire extinguisher, Smoke alarms, Smoke alarms, CCTV in common areas, CCTV outside property, Safety/security feature, Safety/security feature
[Cleanliness & Safety Rating: 9.5/10]
For the Kids (And Those Who Need a Break):
While I didn’t have kids with me on this trip, the Hotel Alte Post seems pretty geared up for families.
- Babysitting service (which is always a lifesaver for parents).
- Family/child friendly environment.
- Kids meal options in the restaurant.
- Kids facilities.

Alright, buckle up buttercups, because this isn't your grandma's meticulously planned itinerary. This is ME, in Oberammergau, and it's going to be a bumpy, beautiful, and slightly chaotic ride. Welcome to the honest truth-telling, folks.
HOTEL ALTE POST OBERAMMERGAU: A MESSY, WONDERFUL ADVENTURE (Probably)
Day 1: Arrival and Bavarian Bliss (with a Side of Jet Lag)
Morning (Like, REALLY Morning): Landed at Munich Airport. Everything was fine, except my internal clock is still firmly rooted in California time. The train ride to Oberammergau was postcard-perfect. Seriously, I swear I saw a fairytale. Except, you know, I was fighting off a nap.
Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Checked into Hotel Alte Post. Holy cow, is this place gorgeous. Carved wood, flower boxes spilling over with… something pretty, and a view of those Alps that makes your jaw ache. The room is… well, it's cozy. Think "charming grandmother's attic" in the best possible way. They even have a little balcony! (Future note: Must remember to bring a good book.)
Afternoon (Slumber Time): Jet lag is a beast. Collapsed on the bed. Woke up an hour later, disoriented and convinced I’d slept through a major historical event.
Late Afternoon/Early Evening: Wandered the streets of Oberammergau. OH MY GOODNESS THE PAINTINGS! I mean, I knew about the Lüftlmalerei (the painted houses), but seeing them in person… it's like a cartoon exploded into life. Seriously, I almost tripped over a cobblestone staring at a depiction of the Passion of Christ. I was completely lost!
Evening: Dinner at the hotel restaurant. Ordered the Schweinshaxe (roasted pork knuckle). Honestly, it looked HUGE! And I was trying to be cultured and eat it with a knife and fork (still not sure I was successful). It was delicious, greasy, and I probably ate way too much. Washed it down with a local beer, and may or may not have had a second one. My face got a little red, I'll be honest.
Night: Back in the room. Balcony time! The air is crisp, the stars are… well, I wouldn't know, there was a giant tree in the way, I was so excited to see the stars from my room.
Day 2: Passion Play Previews and the Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing (Except Eating)
Morning: Walked into breakfast and ate all the bread. Seriously, why is Bavarian bread so good? I swear, I could live on it. The coffee, however, was… strong. My heart rate is probably still somewhere in the triple digits. Headed to the Passion Play location.
Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Passion Play preview. (I'm here early to get a good seat.) The sheer scale of the thing is overwhelming. The stage is enormous, the costumes are incredible, and the actors seem… well, they seem committed. I'm still processing the whole thing. My emotions are scattered.
Afternoon: Wandering. Lots of wandering. Found a little shop and bought a cuckoo clock. (Don’t judge me.) Got lost again (it's my superpower, really). Did some actual souvenir shopping, not just “ooh pretty thing” shopping.
Late Afternoon: Found a park. Sat on a bench. Did absolutely nothing except watch the world go by. Finally realized I needed this downtime.
Evening: Dinner. I’d planned to try something different, but I ended up back at the same restaurant, ordering the same Schweinshaxe. This time, I ate all of it. All of it. No regrets. The waiter gave me a knowing smile. I think he’s seen this before. The beer tasted even better tonight. Maybe it was the walk, maybe it was the play previews, maybe it was all of it.
Day 3: Embracing the Ridiculous & The Big Day
Morning: Woke up with a vague feeling of… something. Possibly the beer. Possibly the Schweinshaxe. Managed to squeeze in a quick walk before breakfast.
Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Passion Play! The main event. The reason I'm here. I had a seat. The acting was amazing. The music was gorgeous. The whole thing was… well, it was a lot. I cried. I laughed. I got really, really lost in the moment. And I’m a huge fan of the Jesus kid, he was really really good!
Afternoon/Evening: Spent hours dissecting the play. Sat on my balcony. I was trying to process the emotions. I had a drink. I then had some more drinks.
Night: Finally went to bed. The experience was very moving.
Day 4: Departure (With a Heavy Heart and a Full Stomach)
- Morning: Devoured one last breakfast. Said goodbye to my charming attic room.
- Late Morning: Wandered around the village one last time.
- Afternoon: Train Station, with a tear in my eye.
Messy Thoughts and Ramblings:
Oberammergau is MAGICAL. But also, exhausting. Mountains are gorgeous. Paint is gorgeous. Food is gorgeous. But I wish I was less awkward.
The hotel staff is incredibly nice, even when I'm clearly stumbling around like a confused tourist.
I need to learn some basic German phrases. “Bitte” and “Danke” only get you so far.
The Schweinshaxe will be on my mind for weeks.
I'm leaving a piece of my heart in this village. It's weird to say, but I truly am.
This "itinerary" isn't perfect, and it's probably not as polished as those fancy travel blogs. But it's REAL. And that's what matters. Ciao, Oberammergau. Until next time.
